Simple Clouser

Tied by Gerry Fabiano during the August activity night.  This is a simple, classic pattern that has a place in everyone’s box.

 

Materials

  • Hook size: 2/0
  • Hourglass Eye with recess for eye sticker Spirit River Real Eyes 3/16
  • Crystal flash
  • Beige Bucktail
  • Pink Bucktail
  • Medium Mono Thread or flat wax
  • 30 minute Epoxy
  • Head cement

 

Instructions

1. Place hook in vise, create a thread base beginning an 1/8th inch behind the hook eye. The thread base should be 3/8th of an inch or so. The eyes will sit in the middle of the thread base and you want to leave ample room to work in front of the eyes.

2. Place the barbell eye in the center of the thread base and tie the mono in a figure 8 pattern.

3. Replace the hook at the top of the bend of the hook and dab a little head cement to secure the thread base.

4. Place the beige bucktail on the underside of the fly. Wrap 2 loops of thread around the bucktail and with your thumb gently splay (evenly spread) the bucktail on the underside of the hook. Wrap 2 more thread wraps around to further secure and firmly place the bucktail in position. Finish wrap the thread around the bucktail.

5. Pull out a few strands of flash material, fold them in half and cut. Fold flash around tying thread and rotate to tie in point on hook. Place 2 wraps of flash and splay. Finish wrapping down flash.

6. Place the pink bucktail on top of the beige bucktail and flash. Wrap 2 loops of thread around the bucktail and with your thumb gently splay (evenly spread) the bucktail into final position. Wrap 2 more thread wraps around to further secure and firmly place the bucktail in position. Finish wrap the thread around the bucktail.

7. Place eye stickers into recesses of the dumbell eyes. For 3D effect, place a dab of epoxy on each eye sticker.
